Notes: Not sure about this, but suspect that the primary Geiger, whose name I list as unknown, may have been Henry/Enrique/Heinrich Geiger (1750-1791), who came to the United States from Germany, and whose spouse, Susanna Dehuff, was a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Updates on Old Search Queries Wednesday, Mar 5 2008

Repost from Thursday, August 17, 2006

My mother in law made a good point last week. She said that the names were spelled differently between the old country and the Americas. When I did a look up I found a host of other alternatives for Geiger and Yduate. My father is convinced that there is only one true spelling of Yduate, but variation cannot be looked over. We came across the pedigree of a set of 3 brothers who fled PA just after the Revolutionary War because, as the source described it, “they would have done anything to gain distance between themselves and their homeland. The link is that the man I’m searching for, is the son of a Hessian soldier in the Revolutionary War, just like the three men in question for whom we had found a nice genealogical resource. I cross-searched the names between familysearch.org and rootsweb.com, and came to the conclusion that this was not the right line, but that this branch may be a distant cousin of my own. So I plan on keeping the record in my files.

Alternative names for Geiger that I have seen are as follows:
Geige, Giger, Geyger, Gieger, Geygher, Geigher, Gigger, Jager…
Ancestry suggests Geigers in the old country were violinists, fiddle players, or makers of such instruments.

Alternative names for Yduate:
Idurte, Duarte, Iduarte, Yduarte, Iduato, Yduato, Iduarte, Iduado, Yduado, Duardo…
Yduate seems to have originated around Andalucia, Spain, and has been used as a designation for many of the early settlers and explorers of the Americas.

The purpose I suppose, for mentioning Yduate in this post, is that through the census records I finally found a link between Geiger and Yduate. The circumstance, however, is that the name was spelled in a variation. For instance, I found mention of a marriage between Geiger and Yduarte. My great grandmother’s line was spelled Yduate, but this line that may parallel her own generation was spawned from a untion between Geiger and Yduarte. Sure, the spelling could be off, or, based on the list of children’s names, it could be a parallel, cousin line.

Either way, it is a step in the right direction on both accounts. I returned to my search through the rootsweb forums on Geiger, and found two other people who are looking for Captain John H Geiger. I left them messages and emailed them in the hopes of other information that I don’t already have.

Surnames: Fuzzard, Meyers.
